Review of Orchid Bay Resort (Belize) During my stay at Orchid Bay Resort, I experienced one of the most traumatic events of my life. We were robbed, and one of us was raped by a man named Darwin, who later admitted to the assault (stating he used a condom, which is the only small mercy in this nightmare). He then lied about the theft in front of his manager, David Berger, and the manager’s wife. Despite the gravity of what happened, the Belize police have done nothing. The resort’s manager—an American (he understood how bad the situation was) —reviewed the security footage, expressed his apologies, and gave us “I’m sorry” bags before our departure. That was it. No accountability. No justice. We were supposed to be escorted safely to our room that night, but that promise was never kept. What happened could have been prevented. I share this not out of anger alone, but to warn others: if you are considering staying at Orchid Bay Resort, please reconsider. What happened to us should never happen to anyone.

PLEASE READ BEFORE BOOKING A TRAVELZOO DEAL. Orchid Bay is not a typical all-inclusive “resort”. Instead, think of it as a “glamping” site with apartments for sale and a small tavern. Having clear expectations will help you decide if it’s right for you. Let’s start with the positives. The staff members were lovely, kind, and hospitable people. The casitas were clean, spacious, and equipped with full kitchens (make sure to arrive with your groceries if you don’t have a car). However, the rest of the property just wasn’t what I was looking for my vacation, so we ended up moving to a more upscale hotel in Belize City. The pool at OB was very small and basic (think Motel 6), and the “bay” beach area left much to be desired for swimming. The all-inclusive dining package included three square meals from a small tavern/beach shack rather than a buffet with a wide variety of cuisines. So, who should stay here? This property is absolutely perfect for retirees or families with small children who want to disconnect on a budget. If you’re looking to lounge in cabana with a scenic view and swim-up bar, this isn’t the place. However, if you want a rustic and remote experience filled with kayaking, fishing excursions, cold beers, and kind locals, this is for you. (Think tank tops, rugged terrain, and flip flops rather than glam for Instagram.) Before making your reservation, keep in mind that OB is located 2 hours from the city and there’s absolutely nothing else nearby. If you don’t have a car, you’re looking at $200 PP for RT transportation from Belize City.

I had the best birthday here thanks to David, we went im may during a heat wave and were provided the best service ever. The host David and his wife were amazing and I couldn't be happier with our stay.

I’m only reviewing my experience at Orchid Bay’s restaurant. We had breakfast here and i ordered the eggs & beans dish, presentation was not so appealing and the flavor was average. I tried the ceviche and shrimp tacos, these 2 dishes were very tasty! And presentation was much more appealing than the first dish. I wish this restaurant had an outdoor patio seating, would’ve been more fresh to sit outside and dine since the restaurant is already located at a beach.

We stayed at Orchid Bay for 4 nights in a two-bedroom condo, and unfortunately, the experience was a letdown across the board. From the start, we didn’t receive a welcome email or any kind of information about what the resort had to offer. There was no check-in or follow-up to see how our stay was going, which made the whole experience feel impersonal and disconnected. The condo had several maintenance and cleanliness issues. There were multiple loose and cracked tiles throughout, which was especially concerning as we were traveling with a baby—a clear safety hazard. One of the ceiling lights didn’t work in one of the bedrooms, and tiles were missing in another room, adding to the sense of neglect. The kitchen counter had ants on arrival, and they remained there throughout the stay despite cleaning efforts. Housekeeping was also subpar. Not only were the bathroom towels extremely worn out, but not all of them were replaced during cleaning—some were clearly just re-hung while still dirty. For a place advertising itself as a resort, this kind of oversight is unacceptable. The on-site restaurant was overpriced and mediocre at best, making meals feel like a waste of money. The most alarming issue was the fire alarm. Halfway through the stay, we realized the batteries had been removed. When we called about it, the agent told us that smoke alarms aren’t required in Belize, and that they usually leave them without batteries to avoid the beeping. I explained that we were traveling with a baby and that it’s completely unacceptable not to have a working smoke or carbon monoxide detector, especially given the recent tragedy where three tourists died from carbon monoxide poisoning at another Belizean resort. Only after I pushed the issue did maintenance show up and install batteries—which worked just fine. The location itself is beautiful—we were just steps from the bay, which was the one redeeming quality of the entire stay. But even that couldn’t make up for the ongoing frustrations. Finally, our unit was on the third floor, and when we called for help with luggage during checkout, no one answered the phone. We had to haul everything down ourselves with a baby in tow—again, not what you’d expect from a "resort." In the end, this property felt more like a poorly managed Airbnb than a functioning resort. It lacked hospitality, maintenance, cleanliness, and most importantly, basic safety standards. I can’t recommend Orchid Bay to anyone—especially not families.
