  A school like this makes you Wonder. BELIZE CITY, Thurs. June 15, 2017–Belize has some of the worst gender disparities in the world and one of the most disturbing is in education. The statistics that show the concerning state of the country's girls and women are shocking, as is the fact that women and girls make up only 16% of Belize's primary school teachers. The situation in local education is as much a legacy of the evils of colonialism as it is a global problem that is getting worse. In June 2014, the Freedom and Justice Foundation, a human rights organization that conducts research, documented more than 800 incidents of violence against women teachers over a two-year period. This situation is unacceptable in a society that claims to be a post-colonial nation. It is intolerable in a nation that already has a terrible teacher-student ratio. The unfortunate truth is that our education system, like much of Belize, is dominated by teachers from just a few ethnic groups. Our schools are particularly vulnerable to bad policies, and not just because they are lacking in quality.
